For much of my life, I believed stability was something I could create through external means. If we had a nice car, the perfect job, a comfortable paycheck, or a well-padded savings account, I thought I would finally feel secure. I sought comfort in having more than enough — extra food in the pantry, excess supplies in case of an emergency, and a financial cushion that I believed would protect us from hardship.
On the surface, these seemed like reasonable ways to build stability. After all, we live in a world that constantly tells us that safety lies in accumulating more — more money, more possessions, more backup plans. But no matter how hard I tried to create security this way, I never quite felt at ease.
The Illusion of Control
Early in my marriage, I became very focused on managing our finances. I tracked every dollar, tightened the reins, and tried to control our spending. My husband, on the other hand, believed we should feel more freedom with our money. This difference often led to tension — while I tried to cling tightly to our budget, he sometimes spent quietly to avoid my anxious reactions.
Vacations became especially stressful. I couldn't relax because I was constantly calculating costs in my mind — worrying that we might not have enough. Ironically, this attempt to maintain control only deepened my anxiety. Even when we weren’t facing major financial hardship, I still lived in fear of "not enough."
That fear became a reality when we moved across the country. We took on a mortgage, my husbands income decreased, and I was starting a business from ground zero. We leaned heavily on credit cards. At one point, our credit card debt climbed past $30,000, and it felt impossible to get ahead. Despite our best efforts, we were stuck living paycheck to paycheck and often paying bills months late.
I became consumed by stress — constantly checking our bank account, mapping out which bills to pay first, and panicking whenever a payment was late. My mind often spiraled into worst-case scenarios: What if our credit score plummets? What if we lose our house? What if this debt never goes away?
It felt like no matter how tightly I tried to control things, security kept slipping through my fingers.
Deconstructing the Need for External Stability
During this time, I started to see how deeply I had placed my trust in external systems — our credit score, our mortgage, our savings, our belongings. I believed those things were the foundation of my stability, and when they felt shaky, my entire sense of safety crumbled.
But something shifted when I started working with my mindset coach. She encouraged me to reflect on the idea that true stability isn’t something we can build solely through money, possessions, or status — it’s something we cultivate within ourselves.
She challenged me to consider what would happen if our credit score dropped or if we lost our home. Could I still be okay? Could I trust that we would figure it out? Learning to hold those thoughts without spiraling into panic was difficult — but liberating.
I realized that stability isn’t about ensuring nothing ever goes wrong; it's about trusting that when life feels uncertain, we can lean on our inner resources — our resilience, creativity, relationships, and ability to adapt.
Shifting Toward Inner Wealth
At the same time, I started exploring new perspectives on abundance. My coach introduced me to the idea that money is an energy — something that flows freely when we stop clinging to it in fear. I began practicing gratitude when paying bills, seeing each payment as evidence that our needs were being met.
Around this time, I also read The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist ( you can find it here), which expanded on the concept of sufficiency — the idea that peace comes not from accumulating more, but from recognizing that what you already have is enough.
That shift was profound. I started noticing moments of abundance in places I hadn’t before — the warmth of our home, the kindness of friends, the simple joy of time spent with my children. I realized that true wealth isn’t defined by numbers in a bank account, but by the inner peace and trust we cultivate in ourselves.
Embracing a New Kind of Security
This isn’t to say I no longer care about money or financial planning — those things still matter. Or that we don’t struggle from time to time with keeping a mindset of trust and sufficiency. But I've learned that chasing external security without building internal trust only deepens anxiety. Now, instead of seeking safety through control, I’m learning to lean into my own resilience. I’ve started trusting that even if things fall apart — if the unexpected happens, if finances get tight — I have the inner strength to find my way through.
True stability isn’t something we buy or accumulate. It’s a mindset — a deep knowing that no matter what life brings, you can meet it with courage, creativity, and trust.
For me, learning to embrace that mindset has been the most valuable investment I’ve ever made.
